Mobile Sensory Zone: Creating Space for Everyone to Belong
A Safe Place to Take a Break. A Stronger Community for Everyone.
Families Connected and Familias en Conexión Mobile Sensory Zone helps families participate more fully in their communities by providing a safe, welcoming place to retreat when a child or young person needs a sensory break.
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy community events—and sometimes, that means having a place to step away, reset and meet your sensory needs.
The Mobile Sensory Zone was created with children and youth who experience disabilities in mind, but it is a welcoming space for everyone in the community who may benefit from a moment to move, decompress or simply take a break.
Two Spaces. Different Sensory Needs.
The Mobile Sensory Zone offers spaces designed to support different sensory experiences.
Sensory-Seeking Space
Some children and youth need more movement and sensory input to help their bodies feel regulated. Our sensory-seeking area gives them a place to move, explore and get the input their bodies are looking for.
Tools and activities include:
- Fidgets
- Mini trampolines
- Sensory steppingstones
- Opportunities for movement and active play
- And more!
This space allows children to safely move their bodies and engage with sensory tools while still being part of the larger community event.
Quiet & Calm Space
For children and teens who are sensory adverse or overwhelmed, the Mobile Sensory Zone offers a quieter environment where they can take a break and self-regulate.
The calming space includes:
- Headphones
- Comfortable bean bags
- Warm, relaxing lights
- A quieter environment for decompressing
- And more!
Sometimes, having a peaceful place to retreat can make the difference between needing to leave an event and being able to return and continue enjoying it.
Bringing Inclusion into the Community
The Mobile Sensory Zone has already been part of a wide variety of community activities, including outdoor festivals, school field day events, indoor events at the Hult Center, the Strength in Neurodiversity Festivals and much more.
Wherever people gather, we want everyone to have a place where they feel welcome.
The Mobile Sensory Zone isn’t just a resource for children and youth with disabilities. It is a space for families, siblings, friends and community members of all kinds who may benefit from sensory support.
